Setup guide and troubleshooting for HoopsPlus on iOS and Apple Watch.

Setup

How to Grant HealthKit & Permission Access

To track your heart rate, active calories, and save workouts to the Apple Fitness app, HoopsPlus requires authorization from Apple HealthKit. Follow these quick steps to get fully set up before your first workout.

1
Launch the App: Open the HoopsPlus app on your iPhone.
2
Accept the Initial Prompt: Tap "Enable Apple Health" when prompted during onboarding or active session setup.
3
Configure Settings: You will be redirected to the iOS Apple Health system permission screen.
4
Enable All Categories: Turn on the toggle for "Turn All Categories On" or individually enable:
  • Workouts: Allows HoopsPlus to save basketball session data.
  • Active Energy: Allows tracking and saving of calories burned.
  • Heart Rate: Enables real-time heart rate and training zone calculation.
  • Date of Birth: Required to estimate your maximum heart rate and age-specific cardio zones.
5
Verify on Apple Watch: Ensure the Apple Watch companion app has loaded. If you ever experience issues, navigate to the iPhone's system settings: Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > HoopsPlus and ensure all write and read permissions are fully toggled on.
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How does HoopsPlus detect makes and misses on the Apple Watch?
HoopsPlus uses Apple Watch's advanced motion sensors (accelerometer and gyroscope) to recognize court gestures, along with native system gestures. By default, you can log a Make using the watchOS double-clench gesture (or double-tapping the screen). You can log a Miss without touching the screen by either rotating your wrist outward and holding it briefly (our rotate mode with progressive haptic indicators) or by clapping your hands together (our clap mode). You can also tap the on-screen "Make" and "Miss" buttons during a workout.
Why isn't my workout syncing between my watch and phone?
First, ensure that both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on your iPhone, and that your Apple Watch is connected. Open the HoopsPlus app on both devices. When you end a workout on the watch, the data is pushed to your phone via Apple WatchConnectivity. If a workout fails to transfer immediately, it is saved locally on your watch and will auto-sync the next time a stable connection is established.
How do I calibrate or change the miss-detection gesture?
Yes, you can! In the HoopsPlus watch app, swipe left or navigate to the Settings panel before starting a session. Here, you can adjust the Gesture Configuration: switch between Rotation mode (looks for a z-axis gravity rotation) and Clap mode (looks for a high-impact acceleration spike). You can also set gesture cooldown limits to prevent accidental double-registrations.
Does the app drain my Apple Watch battery quickly?
HoopsPlus is highly optimized to run background HealthKit session builders and motion-processing at 50 Hz. Under normal conditions, a 60-minute training session will use approximately 8% to 12% of battery on a standard Apple Watch Series 8 or newer, and even less on an Apple Watch Ultra. To save battery, we recommend keeping your watch screen turned off when not actively checking vitals.
Can I train on the court without my iPhone nearby?
No need! You can leave your iPhone in your bag or locker. The watchOS app runs completely standalone. It records your active heart rate, calories, makes, misses, and drill completions offline. Once you return to your phone, launch the HoopsPlus iOS app, and your workouts will sync automatically.
Why is my heart rate not displaying during my session?
This is typically due to two factors: HealthKit permissions or watch fit. First, make sure you granted HoopsPlus access to "Heart Rate" in the Health app. Second, ensure your Apple Watch is worn snugly against your wrist — if the watch is too loose on the court, the optical heart sensor will struggle to get a consistent reading.
